Google makes it easy to poke back through the history of the group
(and find that one Steve started it all when his hearing failed and he
was horrified at the cost of prostheses).

You can do your own search but I found this singularly wise post, by
me, in 1998 (and I have corrected one of my spelling errors):

I agree with the responses. It has been suggested to me that people
who are
disappointed with hearing aids expect too much. This may, in part, be
due to
experience with glasses which restore vision (at the particular
distance)
100%.

For the seriously hearing-impaired,  hearing aids may enable them to
hear well
enough to communicate orally. If they do this then they transform
one's life.

The one piece of advice I can give anyone is: if you are sufficiently
concerned about your hearing to try an aid, persevere for months and
go back
again and again to your audiologist for advice, adjustments and
encouragement. As well as helping overcome your own problem you are
improving
the ability of the audiologist (who is unlikely to be hearing-
impaired) to
help others.
