Hi!  I would like to know the meaning of "how" in the following passage.=20

---------------------------------------------------------------------------=
---
This past July, I went on a volunteer trip to Monterrey, Mexico, with my yo=
uth group. My friends on the bus told me how dirty everything would be. Sec=
retly, I was hoping the bus would turn around somehow. But it did not.=20
Each morning during the hour-and-a-half bus ride to the orphanage, I thou=
ght of how little I had slept the night before, how tired I was, and ***how=
there was no air conditioning on the bus***. But, as soon as the orphanage=
came into view, all those feelings disappeared. The children ran up to the=
gates, screamed with excitement, and jumped up and down because we had fin=
ally arrived.

---

I wonder if the "how" is used like "that" as a conjunction. Or could it be=
replaced by "why", as "why there was no air conditioning on the bus"?

Cordially,

Lazy Pierrot=20
